You made a big investment in carpet.  You want it to look great for a long time.  What is the single most important thing You can do?  In a word, Vacuum!  Do you love vacuuming?  I thought not!  So here are a few tips to make your work really count…

1) Vacuum Properly:

  • Take your time! Your vacuum will do its’ job better, and you won’t get worn out. Don’t bend over. Stand straight and take shorter strokes. Guide the vacuum, rather than pushing it strenuously. Try to develop good “vacuum posture”. Take a few more minutes to have a cleaner carpet and no sore back!
  • Change the pattern of your strokes.   From time to time vacuum at right angles to the direction you normally go. Reverse directions down the hall – it’s good for the carpet pile.
  • Use the proper pile height setting. The roller bar should just flick the top of the carpet. Too high and it can’t do it’s job, too low and it wears out the vacuum and carpet (and you)!

 2) Maintain Your Vacuum:

  • Change the bag when it’s 1/3 to 1/2 full, or if you notice reduced suction. Fine dust (like plaster) will clog the bag quickly and may overheat the motor.
  • Keep the roller brush free of hair, string and other foreign objects. Change it when it’s worn and no longer agitates the carpet.
  • Check your filter regularly. A dirty filter can’t do it’s job, and could overheat the motor.
  • Inspect the beltregularly. Cheap belts stretch and slip within a few months. The roller brush must spin at the proper speed to do it’s job.
  • Make sure hoses are not plugged or cracked and joints don’t leak air.

CARPET’S WORST ENEMY:   Hidden soil and grit wears out carpet.  It’s like sandpaper below the surface, that scratches the fibers every time you walk over it.  Spills look unsightly, but it’s the grit you don’t see that causes the most damage. That’s why regular vacuuming is so important!
